The development of motor vehicles using alternative fuels would
offer significant reductions in carbon monoxide emissions into the
environment. Addressing the problem of a fuel pump's relatively
short life expectancy due to higher volume of fuel flow is essential.
A solution lies in a carbon commutator motor where the copper base
is fused with a layer of electric carbon. Carbon commutator motors
are, due to their chemical inertness to either classic or alternative
types of fuel, over ten times more durable than copper. Also, due
to the lower contact resistance between the brushes and the carbon
commutator layer, a carbon commutator motor uses less electrical
power than the copper alternative. At the same time it provides
smoother running (less friction, homogeneous current field) and
reduces its effet on RF disturbance.
