Jalovec

Jalovec certainly ranks as one of my favourite mountains. It's a wonderful mountain, shaped as a pyramid. The climb to the top should be taken seriously, as it's not so easy. But it's a very rewarding experience.

Several trails lead up there. A very popular starting point is Vrsic pass. Another one, not far away, is Zadnja Trenta. Or you can go from the north side, starting in Tamar valley. Either way you go, you will need 5 to 6 hours to reach the top. This might be a bit shorter for good hikers, but probably not less than 4 hours.

This is a photo from the Vrsic and Zadnja Trenta trail. It's a view from the southeast and you can also see a narrow saddle named Jalovska Skrbina (to the right of the summit). The shortest route down into the Tamar valley leads across this saddle.

That's me, taking a break just next to Jalovska skrbina. A view into Tamar is pretty much breathtaking. Tamar is a wonderful valley and the descend through Jalovska skrbina seems rather steep.

Up to here, the trail is easy. But shortly after, a rather serious climbing begins. Jalovec is not the toughest peak I climbed, but it does require some attention. When we were climbing up here, we managed to get lost for a while. It happened somewhere up there behind my back. Not recommended - the climbing became much harder in an instant. Being on the trail again felt like a true relief. So please watch those trail markers closely.

The north side of Jalovec. This shot was taken early in the morning from Tamar valley. There's still darkness in the valley, but Jalovec shines in the sun. Many say Jalovec looks best from this side.

A practical hint: if you wish to spend a night close to the summit, there's a possibility. A shelter is called Zavetisce pod Spicko. Spicka means little spike and this shelter has a great location under a needle-like rock. From this shelter, you will reach the summit in about 90 minutes. The shelter is on the south side of Jalovec, so it's not visible on this photo. If you plan to use it, good starting points will be Vrsic or Zadnja Trenta.

This picture was taken on the trail from Vrsic. That's my climbing partner (and my husband, too). His name is Jure and he always carries all my gear in his backpack. (-:

The peak behind Jure is named Bavski Grintovec. Haven't climbed that one yet, plans are in place for getting up there soon.
