Prisank

This mountain is enormous. It's over 2600 m high and it's very wide, too. There's a good view from lake Jasna (close to Kranjska gora) towards Razor and Prisank. They look like Laurel and Hardy... Guess which one's Prisank. Razor looks absolutely skinny next to this wide pile of rock.

On this picture, I'm standing just below the summit, getting ready to take on a wonderful trail named Jubilejna pot, which leads from Prisank towards Razor. It leads across vertical rocky faces and through a hole in the wall, Zadnje okno. Prisank is known for these holes. Prednje okno is even bigger and you can see it on a picture below.

About the name: Prisank is rarely used in the books and hiking guides. Not even on the maps. It's an old and original name of the mountain. City slickers have renamed it to Prisojnik over time and this is what you'll find in the literature. But I prefer the old name.

So: how to climb up there? A good starting point is Vrsic pass, just northwest(ish) of Prisank. From there, the summit is reachable in 4 to 5 hours. The usual trail leads around the mountain to its southwest face and goes up from there. But for some adrenaline rush, try the northern route. It's one of the toughest trails in Julian Alps and for the most parts, it's a very vertical affair. So only experienced people should try it. The name of the trail is Kopiscarjeva pot. At the very start, there's quite a tough spot that you need to get across. If it feels too difficult, it's better to turn around and use the southwest face trail. There will be even tougher spots as you go up. But if it got you interested, keep going.

This is a view of Prisank, as seen from Skrlatica. It really is a big heap of rock. In the background, you can see spiky Jalovec in the middle and a bit more round-shaped Mangrt to the right. Far in the background, between Jalovec and Mangrt there are Vis and Montaz. These two are in Italy.

In the early stage of the climb, you can see this face on the rock. Appropriately, it's called a Giant Girl. Apart from the windows, this is another interesting feature here.

Spots like this one are plentiful, this trail lacks no action at all. One of those tough places is so narrow that climbers with too large backpacks have serious trouble. Imagine going up vertically and having to push a heavy backpack in front of you. Not easy at all. Obey the advice (as I did), think carefully about your backpack size when going up this trail.

This is the hole (or window) named Prednje okno. Getting through the hole is the final obstacle and then you leave the dark north face behind and step onto bright sunny south face of Prisank. The difference is amazing. The terrain becomes gentler and the climb to the summit becomes easy.

The hole is really big and clearly visible from the road between Kranjska gora and Vrsic pass.

Here we are, just below the summit; clear blue skies and sun shining brightly. This is another picture of the two prominent neighbours: Jalovec on the left and Mangrt on the right.

Prisank is a very special peak in many ways. Few other mountains are that big and wide. It's also very high, reaching above 2600m. It has all those enormous holes (or windows). And it has two brilliant vertical trails: Kopiscarjeva and Jubilejna pot.
