Over more than a half a century ago in the deep, rugged valley
of the river Idrijca, surrounded by high hills and with a wild,
dense forest, only a lone hunter or charcoal-maker roamed. That
would certainly have been the case for long decades had not one
day in 1490 - as a legend relates - a heavy shiny substance, mercury,
dripped into the pail of a lone pail-maker who was immersing his
wires in a stream. This news swiftly spread around the world.
Wealth lured adventures to descend into the narrow valley. Newcomers
excavated into the heart of the land, deeper and deeper - year
after year, decade after decade.
Mercury is a tale that was born in Idrija. It became a motive
of development, the quest for new methods, new technologies, and
the incessant deliberation of experts who settled here, bringing
their knowledge, culture and spirit. The second richest site of
mercury ore on the whole planet was the reason that Idrija, in
the second half of the 18th century, became the largest town in
Kranjska province and beside Ljubljana, also the most important
center of scientific and technological progress in the land.
The Idrijan mine has been closed for some time now - there
is no more profitability in heavy mining.
Yet the spirit of progress, science and high technology,
which has become rooted in the Idrijan blood over the centuries,
has remained together with the will to work and wish to succeed,
which have both repeatedly born excellence. A new industry has
grown with high technology and knowledge. It has originated and
developed in the Idrijan company Kolektor, which is once again
returning the name Idrija to the world with great success.
